Joining the Church

Joining the church is easy!
Every Sunday, we pass around attendance pads. One of the blocks to check is “Wish to Join”. When you check that, our Evangelism Team will be in contact with you to sign you up for the next Orientation Class. These are scheduled every month, and are two sessions held during the Sunday School hour (easy!) or on Monday nights at 6:00 p.m. Then, you’re ready! You’ll be scheduled to join on an upcoming Sunday.
On your joining day, you’ll be invited forward and asked two questions. The first is, “As members of Christ’s universal church, will you be loyal to the United Methodist Church, and do all in your power to strengthen its ministries? If so, please respond, I will” Then you will be asked, “As members of this congregation at the Kitty Hawk United Methodist Church, will you faithfully participate in its ministries by your prayers, your presence, your gifts, your service and your witness? If so, please respond, “I will”. You don’t have to memorize anything  or prepare something to recite; just be ready to respond as the pastor prompts you. Many times an entire Orientation Class will pick the same Sunday to join, so they are guaranteed to be in a crowd.

If you’ve never joined a church, you will be received by Profession of Faith. If you’ve never been baptized, we will arrange for your baptism. In the United Methodist faith we baptize three ways; “sprinkling”, where the water is “sprinkled” over your head, “pouring”, where water is poured over your head from a pitcher or shell, and “full immersion”, where you will be “dunked” in the sound or the ocean.

You can join by transfer of membership as a full member as an Associate Member or Affiliate Member. As an Associate, you retain your membership in your previous United Methodist Church as you join us; as a Affiliate, you retain your membership in your other-denomination church as you join us. Its like dual citizenship! This is a great option for folks who live here for only part of the year, or for those who don’t want to leave their home church in order to join ours.
